SS Assad: Money Talks, Football Walks

In a move that should surprise absolutely no one, SS Assad FC, yet another Kenyan football club, has thrown in the towel, citing “severe financial difficulties.” Newsflash: Kenyan football clubs are drowning in debt! This isn’t the first time, folks. Remember when Gor Mahia, the self-proclaimed “Husband of Teams,” was begging for PayBill contributions from desperate fans? Or when AFC Leopards, those perennial underdogs, you read that right, were reduced to a begging bowl, their roars replaced by the whimpering of financial distress? This time, it’s SS Assad’s turn to join the long list of Kenyan football casualties.

Apparently, 3 million Kenyan Shillings wasn’t enough to keep them afloat. Imagine! A whole 3 million! In a country where a decent meal for a family of four costs less, these figures are simply laughable.

The blame game is already in full swing. The board, predictably, is “exploring multiple avenues.” Translation: They’re probably sitting around a table, scratching their heads and wondering why no one is lining up to sponsor a team that’s perpetually on the brink of collapse. Let’s be honest, Kenyan football is a circus. It’s a tragicomic spectacle of mismanagement, corruption, and a complete disregard for the basic principles of financial sustainability. The KPL? A laughingstock. Relying solely on sponsorship deals? That’s like building a house on quicksand. And let’s not even get started on the SuperSport debacle. That was a disaster waiting to happen.

Nasoro Suleiman Mwakoba, the former coach, even had the audacity to talk about “keeping the spirit of the game alive.” Please! The spirit of the game is suffocating under the weight of financial despair. This isn’t about “community” anymore. It’s about survival. Kwale County MP Feisal Bader, bless his soul, is urging us to “come together as a community.” Easier said than done, Mr. MP. Most Kenyans are struggling to put food on the table, let alone fund a football team.

And then there’s the Luanda Villa debacle. Cleophas Shimanyula, bless his heart, tried to help. But even he realized this was a ‘sinking’ ship. Refunding his money was the ‘smartest’ decision he ever made. The future of SS Assad FC? Grim. Unless a miracle happens, they’re likely to fade into oblivion, joining the countless other fallen heroes of Kenyan football. But hey, at least we have the memories, right? The fleeting moments of glory, the passionate fans, the agonizing defeats. And, of course, the endless stream of financial woes. Because, let’s face it, that’s what Kenyan football is all about these days.
