In the heart of Kenya’s Women’s National Super League (WNSL), one name continues to shine—Shalen Njeri Kanyara, popularly known as Shanka. The 21-year-old centre-back has been a rock in defense for Kayole Starlets, playing a crucial role in their impressive campaign as league leaders. But beyond her defensive prowess, Shalen’s journey is a testament to resilience, ambition, and unwavering passion for the beautiful game.
Humble Beginnings and Early Influences
Born on December 1, 2003, Shalen’s love for football started in Murang’a, where she played with local boys while still in primary school. Her football journey took her through Gatanga Primary, Kiboko Primary, Kenyatta Secondary, and Thika Girls High School. She also pursued plumbing at Ndunyu Chege Technical College, proving her commitment to both academics and athletics.

Shalen drew inspiration from some of Kenya’s finest football talents, including Kansas City Current forward Mwanalima Adam and former Harambee Starlets captain Dorcas Shikobe. She was fortunate to train with them during their time at Thika Queens, an experience that fueled her drive to excel. Another role model in her football journey has been Simba Queens’ midfield maestro Vivian Corazon Aquino.

From Goal-Scorer to Defensive Powerhouse
Shalen’s versatility on the pitch is remarkable. While she now thrives as a centre-back, her attacking instincts were evident in 2022 when she finished as the top scorer for Green Commandoes in Thika. Her ability to read the game, anticipate opponents’ movements, and deliver commanding performances in defense has made her an integral part of Kayole Starlets’ push for promotion to the top tier league.
At Kayole Starlets, Shalen’s impact has been recognized through multiple accolades. She was named Player of the Month twice in 2024 (March and December) and has also received a number of Player of the Match awards. Her consistency, leadership, and tenacity at the back have helped her team maintain a strong six-point lead at the top of the WNSL standings.
