Nairobi City Stars’ stand-in captain, Edwin Mukolwe, remains optimistic that the Simba wa Nairobi can turn their season around and escape the relegation zone. The club has endured a difficult run, failing to win any of their last eight matches, with their most recent victory coming in a 1-0 triumph over Murang’a Seal on December 7, 2024.
Despite the rough patch, Mukolwe believes the team is making progress.
“You can see we got a point in the last match, an improvement from the successive losses. So we feel like as a team we will just pull through and get the best out of the game tomorrow,” he said.
The goalkeeper acknowledged that Nairobi City Stars, currently second from bottom in the league, should be performing better given their squad quality.
“I feel like as a team we are working together to get more points because if you see the quality we have and the position we are in, we don’t deserve to be there. With all due respect to the rest of the teams in the league, I feel like we just have to capitalize on our chances. We are confident that we are going to have a better second leg and we will definitely get out of the relegation zone,” he stated.
Mukolwe also credited newly appointed head coach Salim Babu for revitalizing the team.
“As a team, we are playing more confidently, we are adapting well to his structure. His work ethic, especially with the younger team, and his coaching profile suit our player profile really well,” Mukolwe explained.
The former AFC Leopards player also shared his national team aspirations but emphasized that his current priority is club survival.
“I think for every serious player, it’s a dream to represent your national team. That’s what we are fighting for, but at the moment, the priority is club football and getting out of the relegation zone. That’s the primary goal for now,” he said.
Mukolwe had a message for the Nairobi City Stars supporters, thanking them for their unwavering support.
“First and foremost, it’s a privilege to have you guys support us. The drive keeps us going, and we appreciate you. We will put our best foot forward in each and every game because each game is a final, and we are fighting for all the available points,” he affirmed.
Nairobi City Stars will host Kakamega Homeboyz tomorrow at Dandora Stadium. Their opponents are in strong form, having gone ten consecutive matches without defeat.
