The Kenya U17 girls’ national football team, Junior Starlets, has ramped up its preparations ahead of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers match against Uganda, set for next month. The team is aiming for another historic qualification after its maiden appearance at the global stage in 2024.
A provisional squad of 51 players was announced on February 10, 2025, featuring a mix of experienced players from the previous World Cup campaign and fresh talent eager to make an impact. Among the notable returnees are goalkeepers Velma Abwire and Scovia Awuor, defenders Lorine Ilavonga and Jenevive Mithel, midfielders Lindey Weey, Halima Imbachi, and Brenda Awuor, as well as forwards Joy Valencia, Joan Ogola, and Quinter Adhiambo.
However, head coach Mildred Cheche faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad after several key players transitioned to the U20 national team. Lorna Faith, Marion Serenge, and Diana Anyango, who played crucial roles in last year’s campaign, have moved up, necessitating reliance on emerging talents to guide the team through the qualifiers.
As part of their preparations, the Junior Starlets played two friendly matches, securing a commanding 5-0 victory over Mathare United Women and edging Zetech Sparks 5-3 on February 18, 2025. These wins underline the team’s attacking prowess and determination to fine-tune their squad before the crucial qualifier against Uganda.

Speaking to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) media on Tuesday, February 18, Joy Valencia emphasized the team’s ambition. “We want to qualify for another World Cup. Last year, we set the bar high by qualifying, and this year, we are striving to go a step further by reaching the semi-finals or even the final. The spirit in the camp is high, and every player is pushing herself with the motivation from our coaches.”
Full-back Rose Nangila Wanyonyi, who is hoping to make her debut in the final squad, echoed the team’s enthusiasm. “Everyone has their eye on the World Cup. Our teammates who played last year share incredible stories about the experience, and those of us who haven’t been there are working hard to be part of it.”
With a strong blend of youthful talent and experienced campaigners, the Junior Starlets remain focused on their goal of securing a spot in the global tournament once again. The upcoming clash against Uganda will be a crucial step in their journey to another historic achievement.
